In Raleigh, the 81 days with temperatures at or above 90☏ was the 4th-most of any year. Several sites had one of their top-ten warmest years on record, including Raleigh (3rd-warmest), Wilmington (tied for the 5th-warmest), Lumberton (tied for the 7th-warmest), and Hatteras (tied for the 10th-warmest). The last calendar year in North Carolina finished with a statewide average temperature of 60.0☏, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), which ranks as our 17th-warmest year on record dating back to 1895. This post wraps up the past year in North Carolina’s weather and climate in a summary of our recent year-in-review webinar. Ultimately, 2022 was the product of both persistent climate patterns and trends that have become familiar in recent years, along with the return of several weather features we hadn’t seen in a while. We love the weather here.It was a year that started and ended with totally out-of-season weather, and included just about every extreme in between, from hot to cold, wet to dry, and frozen to fire. My time in Ohio was porridge too cold, my time in Florida porridge too hot. I was one that increasingly found Florida summers insufferable, though - particularly during monsoon season. People will complain about humidity here, but it doesn't come close to comparing to how Florida is. Raking leaves sucks compared to picking up palm fronds, though. Now I get it - Fall is gorgeous here, and the colors really do make it worthwhile. When you live in Florida you hear people say "but I miss the seasons!" and you kinda roll your eyes at them. Still, very manageable winter - not many days where it's painful cold (I also lived in Ohio, and that sucked). Winters are similar to North Texas - mostly because it's the same jet stream that passes over NC, but we seem to get less ice, and a bit more actual snow. I moved here after 15 years on the west coast of Florida. By the end of March everything is in bloom. I'm not sure about Raleigh, but I read that March 3rd is actually the day of the year with the most snowfall for Charlotte. March is the spring awakening for Raleigh, though and end of season winter storm in the first week is surprisingly common. This past winter we saw snow flakes a couple of times but had no accumulation which is somewhat uncommon.įebruary is my least favorite month - it's dark, it's often cold and overcast. January is the snowiest month for Raleigh, but still that's only about a 3 to 5 inch average total per season. Getting bellow freezing at night is common, but days with highs in the 50s is also common.
#Raleigh weather year round full
January is full on winter by Raleigh standards. Every few years we will see some winter weather in December, but it is uncommon. The last of the leaves turn and fall, and by the end of the month winter is here which, for us, means there is the chance of getting an occasional ice or snow fall. We may even get our first frost before the end of the month.īy the time December arrives t-shirt weather is over. November is true fall in Raleigh, as the trees peak in color. Unless there's a tropical system the weather is often very clear with much less rain. Several 90 degree days is common for the month, and the trees won't reach peak color until sometime in November, but at least we have mild nights to go with warm days. With October comes the first hints of autumn, but not right away. We will have some nights where temps dip into the 60s and it feels downright refreshing. Gone are the puffy white summer clouds of June and early July - it's just muggy overcast soup.īy mid September the end is in sight. Usually in late August we have about a week straight where it's overcast and incredibly muggy. Even night is often no respite from the heat, and thunderstorms are on the weather forecast for nearly every afternoon. 90 degree days become pretty common as well.īy the time August arrives you are on hell's front porch. Pleasant evenings outdoors are common, and many of the soaking rain systems of spring are less common.īy July every day is pretty hot and the sky gets hazy with summer heat towards the end of the month. Usually this day falls sometime in mid to late may.įrom there, June is warm but not always sweltering. That one day where it was so hot that the frigid lake water actually felt refreshing. One big day growing up in NC was the "first real lake day" of the year. Cool snaps are still possible but it is uncommon for a daily high temp to not get above 50 degrees. By mid April many trees have their leaves already.
